KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2016) – On Wednesday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team played its home-finale against undefeated and #4-nationally ranked University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference contest at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners lost by the final score of 56-42, and fall to 9-14 (2-12 Landmark) on the season, while the Lady Royals improve to 24-0 (15-0 Landmark).
Wednesday night was the Mariners' annual Think Pink game. The squad warmed up in special "Think Pink 2016" t-shirts prior to the contest and gave out a number of shirts to fans in attendance in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Sophomore Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) recorded her third double-double of the season (and second in the past seven days) with a team-high 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also dishing out a game-high five assists. Classmate Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) contributed 10 points off the bench.
Scranton came out strong, opening up to as high as a 12-point lead in the first quarter thanks in large part to out-rebounding the Mariners 12-6 in the frame. The Lady Royals continued to play well in the beginning of the second and earned their largest lead of the half, 13 points, 24-11 at 6:54.
Even though the Mariners were down double-digits for most of the first half, they started to chip away at the deficit late, eventually cutting it down to just six, 24-18, with 2:44 left in the second. That was the closest they would get it the rest of the night, however, as they finished the half trailing by eight, 26-18. The Mariners shot 29.2-percent from the field (7-for-24) in the first 20 minutes, while Scranton shot 36-percent (9-for-25).
The Lady Royals came out of the halftime break firing on all cylinders. They extended their lead to 16 points, 38-22, with 5:52 left in the third and then finished the third quarter up 17, 44-27. Scranton's advantaged reached as high as 25 points with 2:56 left in the fourth, but the Mariners fought back and got the lead down to just 14 points by the end of the game.
In the second half, the Mariners shot just 21.9-percent (7-for-32) and finished the game shooting 25-percent (14-for-56). Meanwhile, the Lady Royals shot just under 40-percent in the second half (13-for-33) and finished the game shooting 37.9-percent (22-for-58).
Like Merchant Marine, Scranton also had two players scored in double-figures. Junior Alexix Roman led all players in the game with 13 points, while freshman Bridgette Mann added 10 points. Junior Sarah Payonk brought down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Mariners finish the regular season with two Landmark games this weekend – at Goucher on Saturday, Feb. 20, and then the make-up game at Catholic on Sunday. Both games start at 4 p.m. Live links for the contests are available on the USMMA women's basketball schedule page.
