BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2016) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost on the road at Landmark Conference opponent Moravian College, 73-51, on Monday night at the Greyhounds' Johnston Hall. The Mariners' record drops to 9-13 (2-11 Landmark) on the season, while Moravian improves to 18-6 (11-4 Landmark).
Junior Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and sophomore Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) both scored 11 points to lead Merchant Marine. For Drake, it was the second-straight game that she set a new career-high in points. Wetherington just missed out on what would've been her second-straight double-double, as she brought down a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) added eight points off the bench.
Play was even throughout the opening quarter, as the Greyhounds led by just three points, 14-11, after the first 10 minutes. Moravian dominated the second quarter of action, outscoring the Mariners 27-12 in the frame to bring a 41-23 lead into the halftime break.
It was Merchant Marine that controlled most of the action in the third quarter, as the Mariners fought back to within 11 points, 55-44, through 30 minutes. That was the closest the visitors would get, however, as the Greyhounds' lead reached 20-points in the fourth and they cruised on to the 22-point victory.
Graduate student Alexis Wright recorded a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Alesha Marcks contributed 11 points, while senior Samantha Caligiuri and freshman Maggie Melhem both added eight points apiece.
Up next, the Mariners host conference foe #4 Scranton this Wednesday night, Feb. 17. Tipoff of the USMMA home-finale is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by following those links.
