MADISON, N.J. (Feb. 3, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team earned its second Landmark Conference victory of the season on Wednesday night with a 64-53 win on the road over Drew at the Rangers' Baldwin Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 8-11 (2-9 Landmark), while Drew falls to 7-14 (4-8 Landmark).
Sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) scored a career-high 26 points to lead all players in the game, while classmate Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) added her career-best of 17 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.
Just like the men's team tonight, the Mariners were hot in the second half of action. After trailing, 33-25, after the first 20 minutes of play, they outscored the Rangers, 39-20, over the final two quarters, including 23-11 in the fourth quarter alone, where they took their first lead since early in the first and held on to it.
USMMA erased a 13-point deficit (38-25) at 9:08 of the third quarter with a 16-4 run over the rest of the frame to end up within just one point, 42-41, as time ran out in the third.
In the fourth, the Mariners continued their positive momentum, grabbing a 43-42 lead on a layup by Drake to start the quarter. The advantage grew to as many as four points numerous times throughout the period, but the Rangers kept hanging around until the final three minutes, where USMMA scored the final 10 points to seal the victory.
Free-throw shooting came in clutch down the stretch, as Merchant Marine made 10-of-12 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to maintain the distance over the Rangers.
Two players scored in double-figures for Drew, as Hannah Miller led the way with 17 points and Sam Lane added 15. Ryan Jackson and Courtney Stephens both brought down a team-high six rebounds apiece.
The Mariners will return to action a week from tonight, Feb. 10, when they travel up to Westchester County to take on Purchase. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available for the contest by following this link.
