KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2016) – On Saturday, the USMMA women's basketball team lost in a home, Landmark Conference matchup to visiting Goucher, 54-44, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners fall to 7-11 (1-9 Landmark), while the Gophers improve to 8-12 (3-8 Landmark).
Junior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) led the Mariners with a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 boards. Sophomores Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) and Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) each added six points apiece.
The Mariners were ahead 12-10 after the first quarter, but that would be the only lead they would have on the afternoon. The visitors took the advantage back in the second quarter and finished off the half with a two-point lead going into the break, 23-21.
Merchant Marine fought back and tied the score before the end of the third quarter, but unfortunately, the Gophers broke away in the fourth, scoring in the first nine seconds to regain the lead and staying ahead the rest of the way.
It was a seven-point game with 3:40 left in the fourth, but the Gophers went on a 6-0 run to get their biggest lead of the game – 13 points – 52-39. The Mariners tried to fight back but, the deficit was too large to overcome.
For Goucher, senior Amaka Ezeani score a game-high 22 points and added 10 rebounds, while sophomore Briana Bull contributed 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Merchant Marine returns to the court this Wednesday, Feb. 3, when the Mariners travel to Madison, N.J., to face Landmark opponent Drew. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Rangers' Baldwin Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by clicking those links.
