KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team was defeated in a home Landmark Conference matchup by visiting Moravian, 59-45, on Wednesday at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners to 7-10 (1-8 Landmark), while the Greyhounds improve to 15-3 (8-1 Landmark).
Sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) led Merchant Marine with seven points and six rebounds, while junior Rachel Welburg (Herndon, Va.) chipped in with seven points and four boards. Carmon also matched the game-high with two assists. Sophomores Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.), Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) all added six points apiece.
The Greyhounds led wire-to-wire, as they scored their first basket at 7:43 in the quarter and didn't look back. The visitors' advantaged grew to a 10-point lead after the opening frame. The Mariners tried to cut the deficit back before the end of the half, but were unable to as the Moravian lead grew to 13 at the end of the second, 25-12.
In the third quarter, the Greyhounds went up by as many as 29 points, but that's was when USMMA would slowly start to chip away at the lead and fight back. The Mariners brought the deficit down to 11 with 1:56 left to play, but couldn't get any closer.
For Moravian, junior Morgan Calabrese score a game-high 16 points, while senior Alexis Wright contributed four points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Merchant Marine returns to the court this Saturday, Jan. 30, when the Mariners square off against Landmark rival Goucher. Tip is set for 4 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by clicking those links.
