KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2016) – The USMMA women's basketball team was defeated in a home Landmark Conference matchup to visiting Elizabethtown, 76-58, on Saturday at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners to 6-9 (1-7 Landmark), while the Blue Jays improve to 10-5 (6-3 Landmark).
Sophomore Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) led Merchant Marine with 10 points off the bench, while classmate Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) chipped in with nine and both junior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) and sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) added eight points apiece. Carmon also matched the game-high with eight rebounds.
The Blue Jays led wire-to-wire, as they scored their first basket on their first possession and finished the first quarter shooting 55.6-percent from the field (10-for-18) with a 26-7 lead. The visitors' advantaged reached as high as 28 points in the second quarter (41-13 at 2:29) , but the Mariners fought back with 10 straight points to end the half, including two three-pointers by freshman Miller Torrance (Concord, N.H.).
The deficit was cut to as little as 17 points in the third quarter, but that was the closest USMMA would come the rest of the way.
For Elizabethtown, senior Rachel Forjan score a game-high 30 points, while junior Emily Martin contributed 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Merchant Marine returns to the court this Thursday, Jan. 21, when the Mariners square off against arch-rival Coast Guard in the Superintendents' Trophy game. Tip is set for 6 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by clicking those links.
