Kings Point, NY - Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) had 14 points and Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) totaled nine rebounds but the USMMA women's basketball team fell to Moravian, 70-56, Wednesday night inside O'Hara Hall. USMMA shot 16-of-20 (80%) at the free throw line but was unable to overcome a Greyhounds team that was 26-of-60 (43.3%) from the floor. Katie O'Rourke paced the visitors with 14 points as Moravian had four players reach double figures.
Merchant Marine (4-17, 0-11 Landmark) stayed with the Greyhounds early and used five straight points from VanDerWal to grab a 12-9 advantage following a three-pointer. The Mariners answered a surge from the visitors with a spurt of their own to tie the game at 21-21 following a Kristina Walz (Manona, IA) layup. However, the Greyhounds would engineer a 19-4 run to take a 40-25 cushion into the intermission.
Moravian (18-4, 9-2 Landmark) continued to pour it on in the second half and pushed the lead to 30 points, 65-35, midway through the period on a Nellie Tanguay trifecta. Tanguay made a trio of shots from downtown to finish with 11 points off the bench. The Greyhounds swatted 12 Merchant Marine shots, including five blocks from Laura Jordan. Moravian was 19-of-21 (90.5%) at the charity stripe and cruised down the stretch to a 76-50 decision.
The Mariners return to the court Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Landmark Conference double header at Juniata.
