Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team travels to Drew Wednesday night for a Landmark Conference clash. The Mariners have won two-of-three games but are most recently coming off of a 88-35 loss to Juniata. The Rangers defeated Goucher at home, 71-60, last time out but are just 2-4 at home this season.
Series History... Drew holds an 11-3 advantage over Merchant Marine in the all-time series. However, the two sides split last year's meetings as neither team was able to defend its home court. In the Mariners victory, Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) struck for 29 points on 11-of-23 shooting.
Back to the "Wehl"burg... Freshman Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, VA) has continued to improve this season with strong play off the bench. Over the last seven games the rookie is averaging 8.6 points per game and has twice pulled down double digit rebounds. In USMMA's last game against Juniata, Wehlburg led the Mariners offense and notched a career high with 13 points. She ranks third on the team this season with a total average of 6.7 points per game.
Busy Schedule... The Mariners will kick off February with a single Saturday game against Catholic. After that, the Mariners will play four games in seven days, three at O'Hara Hall. During that stretch, USMMA will square-off with arch rival Coast Guard as well as conference foes Goucher and Moravian.
Rebounding Advantage... Merchant Marine leads the Landmark Conference in rebounding with 49.3 boards per game. The Mariners dominated the glass against NYU Poly and finished with a 55-39 edge. USMMA also ranks in the NCAA Division III top-15 with a margin of +11.2 rebounds per game.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Scranton is the lone undefeated team in the Landmark Conference standings after knocking off Catholic, 83-73. The Royals are 15-2 overall and riding a 13-game winning streak. Moravian is 14-3 and received votes in the latest USA Today Division III National Coaches Poll.
Scouting the Rangers... Hannah Miller is Drew's leading scorer with 17.1 points per game, which ranks third in the Landmark Conference. She has made 41 three-pointers this season and is shooting 80 percent at the free throw line.
Up Next... USMMA returns to action Saturday evening at Catholic.
