Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team welcomes NYU Poly to O'Hara Hall Wednesday night for a non-conference game. USMMA most recently earned a 73-59 triumph Monday afternoon at New Rochelle. The Fighting Blue Jays are currently riding a seven game losing streak and fell to Mount Saint Mary (NY), 73-45, in Skyline Conference action.
Series History... Wednesday's clash will be first-ever meeting between the two programs. This is the only team on the Mariners 2013-14 schedule that they are facing for the first time.
Hitting Their Stride... Merchant Marine had three freshmen provide a strong outing Monday in a win over New Rochelle. Julie Mall (Littlestown, PA) notched 12 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while playing a team high 37 minutes. Point guard Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA) dished out a career high six assists to go along with her eight points. Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, VA) fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
VanDerWal Over 20 Points... Junior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) has posted back-to-back games of at least 20 points. She totaled a season high 24 against Susquehanna and has eclipsed 20 points in three of her last four games. VanDerWal leads the Mariners with 14.6 points per game this season.
Rebounding Advantage... Merchant Marine leads the Landmark Conference in rebounding with 49.6 boards per game. The Mariners dominated the glass against Blue Angels and finished with a 54-34 edge. USMMA also ranks in the NCAA Division III top-15 with a margin of +11.6 rebounds per game.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Scranton and Catholic are the two remaining unbeaten teams in the Landmark Conference standings. The Royals are 13-2 overall and riding an 11-game winning streak. The Cardinals have won nine straight games and are 4-0 in league play.
Scouting the Fighting Blue Jays... Alyssa D'Apice tops the NYU Poly statistics with 17.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. The Fighting Blue Jays are shooting just 24.9 percent from three-point range this year as well as 31.8 percent from the floor.
