New Rochelle, NY – The USMMA women's basketball team dominated the glass and got 21 points from Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) en route to a 73-59 triumph over New Rochelle Monday afternoon. The Mariners held a 54-34 rebounding advantage as Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Julie Mall (Littlestown, PA) played a game high 37 minutes and racked up 12 points and nine rebounds.
Merchant Marine (3-10) jumped out to an 8-3 advantage to start the game following a Kristina Walz (Manona, IA) jumper. Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA) had a strong game running the point for USMMA, totaling six assists to go along with eight points. The Mariners shot 42.6 percent from the floor and held a 34-28 advantage at the halftime intermission.
New Rochelle (9-7) was paced by the 16 points and 14 rebounds of Jah-Leah Ellis. The Blue Angels grabbed control of the contest early in the second half and held a 40-38 edge after a pair of Alyssa Pechin free throws. However, USMMA would then engineer a 7-0 run capped by a VanDerWal three-pointer. The Merchant Marine cushion reached double digits at 55-44 with 8:13 remaining thanks to a Resor jump shot.
USMMA closed the game on a 10-4 spurt to seal the 73-59 win and snap a four-game slide. Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, VA) supplied nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Mariners.
Merchant Marine is back in action Wednesday at 5:00 pm for a non-conference clash against NYU Poly.
