Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team heads to St. Joseph's (LI) Wednesday night. Both teams enter the contest on a six game losing streak with the Golden Eagles still searching for their first win of the season. The Mariners are coming off of a pair of conference losses with St. Joseph's (LI) dropping an 85-38 decision to NYU last time out.
Series History... Merchant Marine leads the all-time series against the Golden Eagles, 10-8. The last meeting between the two sides came in the 2011-12 season with St. Joseph's (LI) earning a 67-62 victory. The Mariners last defeated the Golden Eagles, 69-52, in the 2009-10 campaign.
Hofmann Heats Up... Freshman Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA) had the two best scoring outings of her collegiate career over the weekend. The guard reached double-double digits in back-to-back games, including 14 points against Moravian. Hofmann went a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line versus the Greyhounds and is now shooting 84 percent on the year at the charity stripe.
Rough on the Road... Merchant Marine is averaging 13 more points per game inside O'Hara Hall compared to on the road. The Mariners are shooting just 28.2 percent away from home in 2013-14 and hold a 0-4 record. USMMA is 35.7 percent from the floor in Kings Point as well as being eight percent better from three-point range.
Snapping the Skid... Merchant Marine also used a non-conference contest to snap a six game losing streak last season. In that game, the Mariners defeated New Rochelle, 80-51, behind 18 points from Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) in just 20 minutes of action.
Rebounding Advantage... Merchant Marine leads the Landmark Conference in rebounding with 51.1 boards per game. USMMA has outrebounded its opponents in six-of-seven games, including 9.0 rebounds per game from Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS).
Scouting the Golden Eagles... Danielle Hamlin and Laura Cohen share the team lead for St. Joseph's (LI) with 13.8 points per game. The Golden Eagles are surrendering over 60 rebounds per game and have a season margin of -25.7.
