Mariners Stumble at Landmark Rival Moravian

Bethlethem, PA - The USMMA women's basketball team suffered an 85-53 defeat at the hands of Moravian Sunday afternoon.  Freshman Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA) led the Mariners with 14 points while classmate Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, VA) added 11 points off the bench.  The Greyhounds had 13 different players reach the scoreboard with no one playing more than 20 minutes.

Merchant Marine (1-6, 0-3 Landmark) stayed with the Greyhounds early and trailed just 12-8 following a Sara Ellenberger (Phoenix, AZ) jumper at the 13:54 mark.  USMMA did find success at the free throw line, making 20-of-22 attempts for 90.9 percent, including 12-of-12 from Hofmann.  USMMA was unable to overcome 21 total turnovers as well as being outrebounded, 42-36.  Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) and Allie Drake (Centereach, NY) paced the Mariners on the glass with three rebounds each.

Moravian (8-1, 2-0 Landmark) would break the game open with a 13-0 run following Ellenberger's bucket to open up a 25-8 cushion.  The margin grew to 45-20 as the two teams entered the halftime intermission.  Four Greyhounds reached double digits in points with Danielle Brogan ahead of the pack with 14 points.  The home team finished the game 11-of-22 (50%) from three-point range en route to the 32-point victory.

The USMMA women's basketball team returns to the action Wednesday night at St. Joseph's (LI).
