Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team faces Goucher Saturday night in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams. The Mariners will be looking to bounce back from a 71-69 loss at the hands of CCNY last time out. The Gophers are playing the final of three straight home games but also lost its last outing, 61-56, to Washington Adventist.
Series History... USMMA currently leads the all-time series against Goucher, 7-5, as the two teams split last year's meetings. The Mariners and Gophers both defended their home floor in tight contests in 2012-13. Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) posted a double-double at Goucher with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Leading the Nation... Merchant Marine currently leads all of NCAA Division III with a rebounding margin of +22.3. USMMA has pulled down at least 50 rebounds in each of the first three games of the season. Resor leads the way with 10.0 rebounds per game while senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) has 9.3 boards per game and freshman Julie Mall (Littlestown, PA) is averaging 8.0 rebounds.
A Trifecta of Double-Doubles... In the Mariners last game against CCNY, Resor, VanDerWal, and Mall all racked up a double-double. Resor had 14 points and 17 rebounds next to the 15 points and 11 rebounds of VanDerwal. Mall's first career double-double featured 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Preseason Poll... The Mariners have been picked to finish eighth in the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. USMMA finished last season 3-11 in the league, tied for sixth place. Moravian is the 2013-14 Landmark Conference preseason favorite, receiving six first-place votes.

Scouting the Gophers... Goucher is paced on offense by the 16.6 points per game of Sharnell Huff. Huff is shooting over 50 percent from the floor this year and is also averaging 6.0 rebounds per game. The Gophers are averaging 19.7 turnovers per game and hitting at just a 52.9 percent clip at the free throw line this season.
