Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team hosts CCNY Wednesday night in the Mariners final contest before Saturday's Landmark Conference opener. The Mariners are looking to bounce back from a 52-45 loss to Purchase last time out. CCNY is still searching for its first win of the season after dropping its opening four games of the year, including an 86-77 CUNYAC loss to John Jay last week.
Series History... USMMA holds a commanding 11-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Beavers. The Mariners have won nine straight meetings against CCNY, including a 66-59 road victory last season. Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) dominated that game for Merchant Marine with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Leading the Nation... Merchant Marine currently leads all of NCAA Division III with a rebounding margin of +24.0. USMMA has pulled down at least 50 rebounds in each of the first two games of the season. Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) leads the way with 8.5 rebounds per game while freshman Julie Mall (Littlestown, PA) is averaging 8.0 rebounds.
Free Throws Are Key... USMMA has earned over 30 free throws in both of their games this season. In a victory over Berkeley (NY) the Mariners made 21 of those attempts, shooting at a 70 percent clip. In their loss to Purchase, Merchant Marine was only 17-of-33 (51.5%) at the charity stripe.
Preseason Poll... The Mariners have been picked to finish eighth in the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. USMMA finished last season 3-11 in the league, tied for sixth place. Moravian is the 2013-14 Landmark Conference preseason favorite, receiving six first-place votes.
Landmark Conference Notebook... All eight teams in the Landmark Conference currently have a record have .500 or better. However, there are no unbeaten teams left in the standings. In the latest USA Today Division III national rankings, Juniata was listed as receiving votes.
Scouting the Beavers... Bria Fisher provides the bulk of the CCNY offense, averaging 18.5 points per game, one-third of the team's total. She is also the squad's leading rebounder with 8.8 per game. The Beavers are committing 23 turnovers per game this season.
