Mariners Downed at Purchase, 52-45

Purchase, NY – The USMMA women's basketball team dropped a 52-45 decision at Purchase Monday night.  Demi VanDerWal paced the Mariners with 16 points while freshman Julie Mall (Littlestown, PA) anchored the team on the glass with a game high 10 rebounds.  USMMA outrebounded the Panthers, 50-30, but could not overcome a 27.1 (13-48) shooting percentage on the night.

Merchant Marine (1-1) got the best of a low-scoring first half, eventually taking a 21-17 lead into the intermission.  Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, VA) got hot off the bench and drained three straight jumpers at the end of the period.  She would finish the game with nine points and seven rebounds.  Mall grabbed seven of her rebounds in the opening half as both teams shot just 24 percent from the floor.

Purchase (2-2) scored the first eight points in the second half as the run was started and finished by Lineker St. Hilaire.  St. Hilaire went on to notch a team high 15 points for the Panthers.  The Purchase advantage grew to nine points with 11:41 to play following a Jazmin Garcia bucket.  The Panthers made it 48-38 with just 1:46 remaining as Elizabeth Osowiecki made one-of-two free throws.

VanDerWal hit a trifecta on the next possession but that would be the closest the Mariners would get down the stretch.  Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) and VanDerWal both grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.

The USMMA women's basketball team returns to action December 4 for a home contest against CCNY.
