Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team plays its first road game of the 2013-14 season Monday night against Purchase College. The Mariners earned a 62-54 victory over Berkeley (NY) in their season opener. The Panthers won their first game of the season last time out, 70-59 over Bard, after dropping the first two games on their schedule.
Series History... USMMA leads the all-time series against Purchase, 4-1, including a 69-56 triumph last season inside O'Hara Hall. In that game, USMMA was led by the 17 points and nine rebounds of Kristina Walz (Manona, IA). However, both teams had their share of miscues, combined for 52 total turnovers on the day.
Rebounds, Rebounds, Rebounds... Merchant Marine dominated the glass in its season opening win over Berkeley (NY). USMMA outrebounded the visitors, 56-28, and pulled down 23 offensive rebounds. Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) and Walz led the Mariners with nine rebounds each. Nine different players grabbed at least one rebound for Merchant Marine with five racking up five boards or more.
Taking Charity... USMMA earned 30 free throws against Berkeley (NY) and made 21 of those attempts, shooting at a 70 percent clip. VanDerWal sank 10 of her 12 free throw attempts while Walz went 6-of-8 at the charity stripe.
Preseason Poll... The Mariners have been picked to finish eighth in the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. USMMA finished last season 3-11 in the league, tied for sixth place. Moravian is the 2013-14 Landmark Conference preseason favorite, receiving six first-place votes.
Landmark Conference Notebook... In the latest USA Today Division III national rankings, three Landmark conference teams appeared as receiving votes. Catholic, Scranton, and Moravian all appeared on voters ballots after being ranked last season.
Scouting the Panthers... Jasmin Garcia is the leading scorer for Purchase, averaging 18.0 points per game. She also is totaling 10.7 rebounds per game. The Panthers are struggling in the second half of games and are being outscored by 10 points per game in the final 20 minutes of action.
