Setting the Scene... The USMMA women's basketball team opens the 2013-14 season at home in a non-conference contest against Berkeley (NY).  The Knights won their first game of the new season, 74-62, at Westchester.  Merchant Marine will be looking to duplicate its quick start from last season.  In 2012-13, USMMA won the first three games of the year, including a season opening victory over Berkeley (NY).

Series History... USMMA holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series against Berkeley (NY).  The two teams have alternated wins over the last three seasons with Merchant Marine earning a 57-54 victory in last year's match-up.  In that game, Kristina Walz (Monona, IA) paced the offense with 11 points while Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) came off the bench to supply 12 rebounds.

Strength in the Front... The Mariners return both members of a strong frontcourt in Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) and Kristina Walz (Monona, IA).  Resor ranked third in the Landmark Conference in rebounding in 2012-13, pulling down 9.6 rebounds per game.  She was also one of just three players to appear in every game last season, averaging 8.3 points per game and recording seven double-doubles.  Walz posted 6.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last year and is one now of three seniors on the team that the Mariners will look to for leadership.

Preseason Poll...  The Mariners have been picked to finish eighth in the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.  USMMA finished last season 3-11 in the league, tied for sixth place.  Moravian is the 2013-14 Landmark Conference preseason favorite, receiving six first-place votes.

Landmark Conference Notebook...  In the latest USA Today Division III national rankings, three Landmark conference teams appeared as receiving votes.  Catholic, Scranton, and Moravian all appeared on voters ballots after being ranked last season.  Heading into this week's games the league holds a 9-4 record in non-conference games with Drew, Juniata, and Susquehanna currently unbeaten.

Scouting the Knights... Milan Germany and Aiyesha Brown were both named to the All-HVIAC team last season and return to the Knights' lineup.  Germany led the league in scoring with 17.0 points per game and ranked second in rebounding with 10.8 per game.

Up Next...  USMMA returns to action Monday night for its first road game of the season at Purchase.
