Merchant Marine Heads to Susquehanna Looking for Sixth Straight Win

Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (12-12, 3-10 LC) will take on the Crusaders of Susquehanna University (6-17, 2-11 LC) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Selinsgrove, PA. Merchant Marine is riding a five-game winning streak while Susquehanna is coming off of a 61-47 loss to Juniata as they attempt to halt a four-game losing skid.
Series History... USMMA is 5-7 all-time against the Crusaders, dropping a tight match in Kings Point earlier this season by a 64-60 margin. The last Mariner victory came during the 2011-12 season as Merchant Marine defeated Susquehanna 72-46.
Going for .500... A victory on Saturday would give USMMA their first winning season since 2008-09 when they went 13-12. The 12 victories already collected by Merchant Marine gives Kings Point their highest total since the 08-09 campaign; having not eclipsed the 10-win mark since then.
Scouting the Crusaders... Senior forward Gina Palazzi currently leads Susquehanna in both scoring and rebounding averaging 11.5 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game. As a team, the Crusaders rank seventh in the Landmark Conference, averaging 53.9 points per contest.
Stealing the Show... Senior Captain Roshenda Josephs broke both the USMMA and Landmark Conference single-season steals record Wednesday night against Drew; snatching 93 on the year. Her average of 3.9 steals per game is tops in the conference and ranks 19th overall nationally. Josephs sits second on Merchant Marine's all-time career steals list totaling 242 over the past four years.
Crashing the Boards... Merchant Marine sits third in the Landmark Conference in rebounds per game, averaging 44.4 on the season. Sophomore forward Rebecca Resor has been helping the cause off the glass all year long, ranking third in the conference, pulling down 9.7 per game. Josephs set a USMMA single-game record in Wednesday night's contest hauling in a game-high 20 boards.
Halfway There... Sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal is a little over halfway to becoming the fifth member of USMMA's prestigious 1,000 point club. Although her production in 2012-13 has dropped off a bit from her outstanding freshman year; she she's tallied a total of 555 points over her first two seasons. VanDerWal comes into the contest fresh off of a career-high tying 29 point effort against Drew, needing to average just under nine points per game for the rest of her career to reach the 1,000 point plateau.
