Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (11-12, 2-10 LC) will take on the Drew University Rangers (9-14, 5-7 LC) Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM in Madison, NJ. Merchant Marine is looking to go on their first five game winning streak since November-December of 2005 while Drew is coming off of a 67-49 Landmark Conference victory over Goucher this past weekend.
Series History... USMMA is 2-11 all-time against the Rangers, having lost seven consecutive matchups with Drew. The last Kings Point victory came in the Mariners' final game of the 2008-09 campaign which Merchant Marine won 66-61.
Scouting the Rangers... Drew has a pair of scorers averaging double-figures on the season with freshman forward Courtney Stephens putting up 11.0 points per game and senior guard Jennifer Mateo scoring 10.1 points per contest. The Rangers also have a solid outside shooting game with senior guard Jeramie Barletta currently ranked second in the Landmark Conference in three-point percentage, knocking down 37.9% of her attempts from beyond the arc.
Stealing the Show... Senior Captain Roshenda Josephs tied USMMA's single-season steals record, snatching five against Coast Guard on Monday. She needs only one more to break the Merchant Marine single-season record and two more to break the Landmark Conference single- season record set by Juniata's Claudia McDowell in the 2007-08 season. Josephs' average of 4.0 steals per game is tops in the conference and ranks 18th overall nationally.
Piling on the Points... Senior captain Tamara Kaileh has totaled double-figure scoring in each of the last six games for the Mariners, including a career-high 24 against Juniata this past weekend; becoming the first USMMA women's basketball player to earn Landmark Conference Player of the Week accolades this season. Kaileh leads Merchant Marine in scoring averaging 12.7 points per game, ranking fifth in the conference as she currently sits seventh on the academy's all-time scoring list.
Doubling Up... Sophomore forward Rebecca Resor currently leads the Mariners tallying seven double-doubles on the season. Her team-high 9.7 rebounds per game currently ranks third in the Landmark Conference.
