Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (8-12, 1-10 LC) will take on the Eagles of Juniata College (16-6, 7-4 LC) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Kings Point, NY. Juniata finds themselves in the thick of a playoff race as they jockey for position within the Landmark Conference while Merchant Marine looks for a strong finish to their home schedule coming off of two consecutive non-conference home victories.
Series History... USMMA has yet to record a victory against the Eagles, falling to the Juniata in all 11 of their previous meetings. Earlier this season, the Mariners were bested by the Eagles 69-60 in Huntingdon, PA.
Scouting the Eagles... Junior forward Kate McDonald currently leads Juniata in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game; ranking her fourth overall in the Landmark Conference. She also sits third in the conference in field goal percentage (46.5%). The Eagles also have a strong perimeter scoring game with senior guard Jordan speck currently ranking third in the conference knocking down 37% of her three-point attempts.
Senior Night... Prior to the contest, the Merchant Marine Academy will be honoring senior captains Tamara Kaileh and Roshenda Josephs for their four years of service and dedication to the women's basketball program. Kaileh currently ranks seventh on USMMA's all-time scoring list and Josephs sits second on the academy's all-time steals list. She is also eight thefts away from breaking Merchant Marine's single-season steals record of 91.
Holding the Lead... Merchant Marine is a perfect 7-0 when taking a lead into halftime, and 6-0 when shooting a better field goal percentage than their opponents.
Crashing the Boards... The Mariners have grabbed 50+ rebounds in consecutive games, nabbing 50 Monday night against New Rochelle and 56 Thursday night against Medgar Evers.
Up Next... USMMA will face service academy rival Coast Guard (8-12, 6-9 NEWMAC) in New London, CT Monday evening at 7:00 PM. The Mariners have defeated USCGA in three of their past four matchups, including a thrilling 64-60 victory last year in Kings Point.
