USMMA Ready to Face Medgar Evers Tomorrow at 7:00 PM
Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (8-12, 1-10) will take on the Cougars of Medgar Evers College (0-22, 0-13 CUNYAC) Thursday evening at 7:00 PM in Kings Point, NY. The Cougars are still searching for their first win of the season while Merchant Marine is coming off of an 80-51 victory over New Rochelle; snapping a six game losing streak.
Series History... The Mariners are 4-0 all-time against the Medgar Evers, defeating them in last year's campaign by a score of 72-35.
Scouting the Cougars... Freshman guard Jaquy Lanot leads the team in scoring, averaging 4.2 points per game and freshman forward Antanique Williams currently leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.9 boards per contest.
Think Pink... During this week's games (2/4, 2/7), the women's basketball team, coaches, and game-day staff will be sporting pink attire to raise Breast Cancer awareness as part of their "Think Pink" initiative. USMMA women's basketball has been raising awareness through "Think Pink" since the arrival of Coach Dempsey and Coach Shields in 2008.
Stealing the Show... Senior captain Shendi Josephs leads the Landmark Conference in steals per game, averaging 4.1 on the season. She's currently ranked 11th on the NCAA leaderboards and sits second on Merchant Marine's all-time career steals list with 231. Josephs is on pace to break USMMA's single season steals record of 91, totaling 82 on the year with five games remaining.
Doubling Up... 80 points against New Rochelle marked Merchant Marine's highest scoring output of the season. Four Mariners reached double figures and sophomore forward Rebecca Resor recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season.
Up Next... USMMA will return to Landmark Conference play as they host Juniata in their final home game of the season Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Kings Point, NY. Prior to the contest, the Merchant Marine Academy will be honoring senior captains Tamara Kaileh and Roshenda Josephs for their four years of service and dedication to the women's basketball program.
