Towson, MD – Senior captain Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, VA) tallied 23 points, seven boards, and seven rebounds for the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (7-12, 1-10) who couldn't quite get by the Gophers of Goucher College (6-14, 2-8) Saturday night in Towson, MD.
Two other Mariners reached double-figures with sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) and senior captain Tamara Kaileh (Kings Park, NY) scoring 14 and 10 respectively. Resor also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to earn her team-leading fifth double-double of the season.
A slow start for Merchant Marine haunted them once again as Goucher jumped out to 8-3 advantage in the first four minutes of play. The Mariner offense seemed to sputter early, unable to grab a lead in the first half.
USMMA was able to cut an eight point deficit to three on a Kaileh jumper and a handful of Josephs free throws, but the only scoring in the final 4:38 belonged to the Gophers as Goucher took a 28-20 lead into the break.
Despite giving up the first two points of the second half, the Mariners came out of the locker room looking for more offensive production. USMMA would go on a 13-3 run to nab their first lead of the contest (39-37) on a pair of Kaileh free throws with 10:51 remaining.
Goucher quickly regained the advantage by nailing a three pointer, followed by the Mariners grabbing their final lead of the evening on a Josephs jumper.
Another Josephs jumper with 37 seconds remaining brought Merchant Marine within two, but the Gophers were able to successfully ice the game by knocking down their free throws in the waning moments of regulation.
Even though Merchant Marine outscored the Gophers 35-32 in the second half, they couldn't quite overcome the first half hole they dug for themselves. This marks USMMA's first lost to Goucher since the 2010-11 season.
The Mariners return home Monday February 4 to face the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (7-13, 2-2 HVWAC) at 7:00 PM in Kings Point.
