Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (7-11, 1-9) will take on the Gophers of Goucher College (5-14, 1-8) Saturday evening at 5:00 PM in Towson, MD. Both squads are looking to end recent skids as Goucher comes into the contest losers of six in a row and Merchant Marine has dropped their previous five contests.
Series History... The Mariners are 7-4 all-time against Goucher, winning their last three games against the Gophers. Earlier this season, Merchant Marine defeated Goucher by a score of 51-45 to pick up their only conference victory of the year.
Scouting the Gophers... Junior forward Sharnell Huff leads the Gophers in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game overall and 8.9 points per game in Landmark Conference matchups. Goucher is led in rebounding by junior forward TaQuisha Lambert who's grabbing 6.6 rebounds per game overall and 7.0 rebounds per game in conference play.
Piling on the Points... Senior captain Tamara Kaileh currently leads the Mariners in points per game (12.3) and in double-figure scoring games, reaching the 10-point plateau on 12 different occasions in 2012-13. Her 16 points against Scranton put Kaileh over the 800 point plateau for her career as she currently sits seventh on USMMA's all-time list. She currently ranks fifth in the Landmark Conference in points per game.
Stealing the Show... Senior captain Roshenda Josephs leads the Landmark Conference in steals per game, averaging 3.9 on the season. She's currently ranked 16th on the NCAA leaderboards and sits second on Merchant Marine's all-time career steals list with 220. Josephs is on pace to break USMMA's single season steals record of 91, totaling 71 on the year with seven games remaining.
