Mariners Fall Short Against #22 Moravian

Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (7-7, 1-5) were defeated by the nationally ranked Greyhounds of Moravian College (15-2, 6-0) by a score of 69-53 Wednesday night in Kings Point, NY.

Sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) led the way for Merchant Marine tallying 18 points and 17 rebounds (both season-highs) on her way to recording her team-leading third double-double of the season.

Resor had her long range game working, shooting 8-13 from the field, including a couple of early jumpers from the top of the key and a her first three-pointer of the season late in the second half.

Sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) was the only other Mariner in double-figures, scoring 11 off the bench for Merchant Marine.

Unlike the previous meeting between these two teams earlier in the season, Merchant Marine was able to keep within striking distance early.   The Mariners didn't allow the Greyhounds to take an advantage greater than four in the opening ten minutes, and grabbed their first lead of the contest on a jumper by senior captain Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, VA) at the 12:38 mark.

The Greyhound offense caught fire near the end of the first half scoring 15 points in the final six minutes; taking a 41-25 lead into the break capped off with a layup by Moravian freshman guard Steph Peterson (Lafayette, NJ).

Moravian opened their biggest lead of the game (54-34) on a pair of free throws by junior forward Erika Blair (Easton, PA) with 9:22 remaining.  The Mariners came storming back over the next three minutes to nearly cut their deficit in half on a VanDerWal layup and foul shot to convert a three-point play.

Despite equaling the Greyhounds in second-half points (28-28), Merchant Marine couldn't complete the comeback to overcome Moravian's late first-half surge which ended up being the difference in the game.

Moravian was led by sophomore forward Alexis Wright (Shillington, PA) who notched her 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

The Mariners will head to Huntingdon, PA for a Landmark Conference matchup with Juniata (12-4, 3-2) Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2:00 PM.
