Washington, D.C. – Senior captain Roshenda Josephs (Culpeper, VA) led the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (6-5, 1-3) in points (11) and rebounds (11) as USMMA fell short of snagging a victory against the unbeaten Cardinals of the Catholic University of America (12-0, 2-0) by a score of 67-30.
The 11 and 11 effort was Josephs' second double-double of 2012-13; the fourth of the season for Kings Point.
USMMA kept the game close in the opening minutes of the first half as a pair of free throws by junior forward Kristina Walz (Monona, IA) at the 13:42 mark pulled the Mariners within two. Over the next ten minutes of play, the Cardinals would go on a 24-2 run to open up a 30-6 lead capped by a three-pointer from Catholic freshman guard Kristen Walheim (Malvern, PA).
A pair of Josephs jumpers and a free throw by freshman guard Marlee Chovich (Lake Oswego, OR) cut the Merchant Marine deficit to 30-11 at the break.
The Mariners would start the second half strong, trading buckets with the nationally ranked Cardinals. However, a three pointer by Catholic senior forward Kelli Josephson (West Caldwell, NJ) would spark a 21-2 streak ending any hopes of a Kings Point comeback.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by senior guard Jill Woerner (Providence, RI) who tallied a game-high 19 points.
Merchant Marine has a week off before returning to Landmark Conference play Saturday, Jan. 12 against the Crusaders of Susquehanna University (5-8, 0-2) in Kings Point at 2:00 PM.
