Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-4) will take on the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University (3-8) Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. NJCU has lost their last three contests while the Mariners just recenty snapped a three-game losing streak of their own in a home win Sunday afternoon against Vaughn College.
Scouting the Gothic Knights... Sophomore guard Ashley Vazquez leads NJCU in points per game with 12.8 on the year; the only Gothich Knight currently averaging double-figures. Junior forward Alnisa Hernaiz leads the team in rebounding with 9.5 boards per contest.
Senior Scorers...Senior captains Tamara Kaileh and Roshenda Josephs have been the most consistent scoring threats for the Mariners, tallying 10 points or more in a combined 12 games.
Holding the Lead and the Ball... Merchant Marine is 5-0 this season when either leading or tied at the 10 minute mark of the second half. Likewise, they are 0-4 when trailing at this point. The Mariners are also 5-0 when they commit fewer turnovers than their opponents and 4-0 when they out-rebound the opposition.
High-Percentage Shots...USMMA will look to find the open player and create high-percentage scoring chances. In 2012-13, when shooting 40% or better from the field, the Mariners are 2-0. They are 0-2 when shooting below 30%.
Chasing 300... Head Coach Matt Dempsey enters the game one win away from the 300 plateau in his NCAA head coaching career. Since 1986, he's recorded 38 wins as the head women's basketball coach at Green Mountain College, 216 wins as the as the head men's basketball coach at Green Mountain College, and 45 wins as the head women's basketball coach at the Merchant Marine Academy; compiling a career record of 299-255.
