Kings Point, NY – Junior forward Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) led the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-4) in scoring, finishing three assists shy of a triple double, in a 75-12 victory over the Vaughn College Warriors (0-6) Sunday afternoon in Kings Point, NY.
Winfree scored a game-high 19 points, and added 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore forward Sara Ellenberger (Phoenix, AZ) also recorded her first double-double of 2012-13 with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Overall, the Mariners had four players reach double-figures with sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) and freshman forward Rachel Smith (Broomfield, CO) each recording 10 points apiece. Smith's 10 points and seven rebounds were both career-highs.
The Mariners controlled play throughout the contest, shooting 45.8% from the field for the game; taking a 46-4 advantage into the break. Bolstering their field goal percentage were Ellenberger, who shot 9-11, Resor, who went 5-6, and Winfree, who made 7-11 and 4-6 from three-point range.
USMMA Head Coach Matt Dempsey cleared the bench early on as each reserve saw more minutes than their starting counterparts. Combined, the five starters averaged 13 minutes each, while the bench averaged 27 minutes apiece.
Merchant Marine also committed a season-low nine turnovers as the Mariners scored 40 points in the paint, 30 points off of turnovers, and had 23 second chance points.
USMMA returns to action Wednesday night when they travel to Jersey City to take on the Gothic Knights. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM.
