Rutgers Camden Defeats Merchant Marine 69-54

Kings Point, NY -- The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (3-1) were upended by the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden (3-2) by a score of 69-54 Monday night in Kings Point, NY.

Senior captain Tamara Kaileh (Kings Park, NY) led Merchant Marine in scoring with 13 points and also recorded 5 rebounds.  Sophomore forward Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) recorded a double-double off the bench, the Mariners' first of the season.  Resor scored 11 and also nabbed 11 boards.

Rutgers-Camden had four players in double figures, with sophomore guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ), sophomore guard Loretta Kelly (Wildwood Crest, NJ), junior forward Ossierra Monroe (Camden, NJ), and senior forward Brittany Turner (Belleville, NJ) scoring 18, 14, 12, and 10 respectively.  Chukwueze also had 13 rebounds, giving her a double-double on the night.

Once again, the Mariners fell behind early, giving up 13 of the game's first 15 points.  Merchant Marine had their long range game working as sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal (Springdield, IL), junior forward Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ), and freshman guard Marlee Chovich (Lake Oswego, OR) all hit three pointers in the opening 10 minutes; cutting the Scarlet Raptor lead to seven.

Rutgers Camden came right back with a quick layup at the other end of the floor to extend their advantage once again.  At halftime, the Scarlet Raptors led 32-22; the most points given up by the Mariners in a first half this season.

In the second half, Merchant Marine would cut the Scarlet Raptor lead back down to seven when Kaileh made a layup at the 16:04 mark.  However, that's as close as the Mariners would get, as Rutgers-Camden would continue to extend their lead, pulling away in the final minutes for the 15 point victory.

Points in the paint were a major factor in the outcome of the contest as Merchant Marine was outscored 38-18 in the key.  The loss ends the Mariner's three-game winning streak as they end their home stand with a 3-1 record.

Merchant Marine will look to bounce back from the loss on Wednesday night as they head to the road to face CCNY (1-4) at 7:30 PM.
