The United States Merchant Marine Academy pistol team placed fifth out of nine competing teams at the National Rifle Association Collegiate Championships this past week in Fort Benning, Ga. The team placed fifth in the free pistol, eighth in standard pistol and fifth in air pistol. For the third and final time in as many outings, the Mariners finished ahead of Coast Guard in the team standings and swept the Bears in all nine events.
Joshua Cox was the top finisher for the Mariners in all three events – free, standard and air – and placed fourth overall individually with an aggregate score of 1,603 points. He placed fourth individually in air, seventh in standard and eighth in the free pistol event.
The Mariners had a team score of 1,909 points in the free pistol event. After Cox, Timothy Burke, Michael Budesa and David Brienza finished second through fourth respectively on the team.
USMMA had a team score of 1,990 points in the standard pistol event. After Cox, Budesa, Brienza and Burke rounded out the top four scorers on the team, respectively.
In the air pistol event, USMMA had 2,159 points. Cox, Budesa, Brienza and Burke finished first through fourth on the team.
