BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2017) – On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's cross country team sent seven men up to Van Cortlandt Park to compete in the Baruch College Invitational. The Mariners came in fifth place out of eight teams that competed with 92 points. The City College of New York won the event with 51 points and Baruch (second with 65 points) and Yeshiva (third with 67 points) rounded out the top three.
Junior John Robertson (Pfafftown, N.C.) led USMMA with a 10th place finish in the 8K race with a time of 30:26.8. Freshman Gabriel Tapia-Suarez (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) placed 12th in 30:50.1 and fellow plebes Michael Cahill (Medford, Mass.) and David Aranda (Ridgecrest, Calif.) came in 20th (32:05.4) and 23rd (32:41.3), respectively. Freshman Anthony Lund (Rathdrum, Idaho) was the last Mariner to score, as he crossed the finish line in 27th place with a time of 32:59.2.

Merchant Marine is back in action next Sunday, Sept. 17, when they return to Van Cortlandt Park to take part in the Queensborough Invitational. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m.
