KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 25, 2016) – On Thursday, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy fourth-year head men's & women's cross country coach David Lawrence Jr. announced the schedule for the upcoming 2016 season. This year's campaign will consist of eight meets ranging from early September until mid-November.
The season begins at the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Division I Delaware State in Smyrna, Del., on Saturday, Sept. 10. Up next is the Bard Raptors Invitational in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., on Sept. 17. The September portion of the schedule comes to a close on the 24th, when the Mariners travel to Williamstown, Mass., to take part in Williams' Purple Valley Classic.
The very first day of October will see Merchant Marine travel up to Milton, N.Y., to take part in its first Skyline Conference meet of the season, the MSMC Knight Invite, hosted by Mount St. Mary College. It's back to Massachusetts a week later on Oct. 8, as USMMA will compete at the James Early Invitational, hosted by Westfield State. At the James Early Invite, the Mariners will take on arch-rival Coast Guard in head-to-head action to earn points towards the overall standings in the quest for the Superintendents' Trophy.
The 2016 Skyline Conference Championship Meet is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 30, at Broadway Park in Sayville, N.Y. This will be the Mariners' first time competing in this event since 2006, having spent the past nine seasons in the Landmark Conference and just recently re-joining the Skyline ahead of the 2016-17 academic year.
The following Saturday, Nov. 5, USMMA will travel back up to Milton, N.Y., to take part in the 2016 ECAC Division III Championship Meet at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome. The regular season will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the NCAA Regional Meet hosted by Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J. Should the Mariners qualify, the NCAA Division III Championship Meet will be held on Nov. 19.
