Before USMMA: McGowan was a multi-purpose athlete at Atholton high school participating in football, ice hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, cross country, and track. He was captain of his cross country team and was a member of an indoor track state championship team. McGowan graduated as a member of student council and the National Honor Society.
2011: McGowan helped lead USMMA to a first place finish at the Purchase College Invitational by finishing second overall in a field of nearly 100 runners. He received 2nd team all-conference honors.
