A solid showing by men at ECAC cross country championships

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy completed its penultimate race of the season on a beautiful course in the Berkshire mountains contesting the Eastern College Athletic Conference men's cross country championships on Saturday.

With great conditions and stellar competition, the Mariners took 21st place of the 51 competing teams in the 8K competition at Mount Greylock.

Freshmen and sophomores led the way, garnering all five scoring place for the Mariners. Freshman David McGowan ran a 28:49 to pace the team, coming across the line in 81st place. Freshman Nicolas Walsh ran 29:04 and sophomore Sam Sanford 29;08, finishing in the 104th and 110th places, respectively.

"The men ran well overall," men's coach Greg Lott said. "We didn't accomplish all that we were holding, but it was still a good performance. Nick Walsh and Sam Sanford ran their best races of the season and really came up big for us. Now we have one last shot to put it all together for next week."

The USMMA will head to St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. for the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships this weekend to square off against the top programs in the area.
