COLT STATE PARK, R.I. - On Saturday, the United States Merchant Marine Academy men's cross country team ran in the ECAC Championships in Colt State Park, R.I. As a team, the Mariners finished 19th out of 44 squads. Every member of the men's team recorded personal bests at the meet.
The trio of juniors, Tom Fossa (Fleming Island, Fla.), Ross Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Brendan von Koss (Petaluma, Calif.) all notched personal bests. Fossa ran the 8k in 28:16, Whelpley crossed the finish line at 28:17, and von Koss notched a clocking of 28:25.
"It is very rare to have an entire team run their best race on the same day. Their training efforts have been very strong and the team is starting to peak at the right time," Head Coach Gregory Lott commented after the race. "A week of rest, after getting through finals last week, served the team well. After another week of tapering, the men will be poised to show even greater improvement at the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet."
Head Coach Gregory Lott and the Mariners return to action on Saturday when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to compete in the NCAA Qualifying Meet.
