2015-16 Athletic Award Winners Announced; McDaniels And Rose Earn Top AccoladesThe U.S. Merchant Marine Academy held its 2016 Awards Convocation on Friday morning at the Ackerman Auditorium as part of Graduation Weekend festivities. Four major athletic award winners were announced during the ceremony – the Male and Female Athletes of the Year as well as the two Coaches of the Year – along with a number of other athletic awards and honors.
Mariners Boast 23 Student-Athletes On Landmark Spring Honor RollThe six U.S. Merchant Marine Academy spring teams garnered a total of 23 student-athletes, collectively, on the Landmark Conference Spring Honor Roll, the league announced on Tuesday morning. In total, 418 student-athletes received recognition from the conference’s nine institutions.
Robbins, Pressey And Theriault Lead Mariners At TCNJ Lions’ Invite SaturdayThe U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men’s track & field team competed in the Lions’ Invitational on Saturday, hosted by The College of New Jersey. The Mariners had three top-20 finishes at the event by seniors Nathan Robbins (Los Alamos, N.M.) and Kenneth Pressey (Yorktown, Va.) and freshman Luke Theriault (Southbury, Conn.).

Men’s Track & Field Places 10th At CGA Spring InviteThe USMMA men’s track & field team came in 10th place at the CGA Spring Invite on Saturday, hosted by arch-rival Coast Guard. The Mariners, who racked up 24 points on the day, had six top-10 finishes at the event, including a second-place showing by senior Tomas Sanchez (Manati, P.R.) in the 400 meter run.

Sanchez Qualifies For ECACs To Highlight Mariners’ Day At Lehigh’s Covert ClassicThe USMMA men’s track & field team took part in the John Covert Classic on Saturday, hosted by Division I Lehigh University. The Mariners sent 16 competitors to the event and were led by senior Tomas Sanchez (Manati, P.R.), who had the squad’s highest finish of the day and qualified for the ECAC Championships with a second-place showing in the 500 meter run in 1:07.56. He was narrowly beaten out by Lehigh’s Tom Troxell by just seven-hundredths of a second.
Pressey’s First-Place Finish In Triple Jump Highlights Mariners Day At CGA Winter InviteThe USMMA men’s track & field team competed at Coast Guard’s CGA Winter Invite on Saturday and the Mariners ended the event in fifth place. Senior Kenneth Pressey (Yorktown, Va.) had the Mariners’ top finish at the event, coming in first place in the triple jump with a jump of 12.77 meters (41' 10.75"), which was a personal best distance for the senior.

Men’s T&F Begins New Year At Rutgers Invite On SaturdayThe U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men’s track & field team took on a tough field of mostly Division I teams at the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday. 10 Mariners made the trip to Jersey for the event, with freshman Severin Blenkush () leading the way with the squad’s top finish – a fifth-place showing in the 1,000 meter run (2:36.67), which was a season-best time for him.
Five New Members Inducted Into USMMA Athletics Hall Of Fame Friday NightThis past Friday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Athletics Department inducted five new members into its Hall of Fame as part of its 16th class to be included. The induction ceremony was in conjunction with the Academy’s and the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation’s (AAF) Homecoming celebration this past weekend. The Alumni Association and Foundation hosted the event in Melville Hall on campus here in Kings Point.
Six Mariners Selected To Landmark Conference Spring All-Sportsmanship TeamsBack in May, the Landmark Conference announced the league’s spring season All-Sportsmanship Teams and USMMA had six student-athletes selected to the squads for their displays of sportsmanship throughout the season. The All-Sportsmanship Team includes one student-athlete from each institution for each sport and is selected by the players and coaches from their respective team.
Neumann Wins Silver, Qualifies For ECACs In Pole Vault On Day One Of Landmark ChampsOn Saturday, freshman Blase Neumann (Spokane, Wash.) placed second in the pole vault event on the first day of the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet, hosted by Susquehanna University. His mark of 4.40 meters (14’ 5.25”) also qualifies him for the ECAC Championship Meet, which will be held May 14-15 in Springfield, Mass.
