Wilfredo de Jesus begins his second season as an assistant track and field coach, working primarily with throwers. He also helps with strength training and off-season work for all speed and power events.
In 2011-12, he was responsible for the first women’s individual Landmark Champion in the history of the Academy, Tara Mulligan. In working with De Jesus, her personal best mark in the Hammer Throw improved from 33 meters to a mark of 42.49m. She repeatedly broke Academy records throughout the season in the both the Hammer and Weight Throws (8 times). Mulligan was also Landmark Conference Runner-up in the WT with a mark of 13.1m.
In addition to the success Coach de Jesus achieved with Midshipman Mulligan, he also coached Kevin Stapf (who had not thrown prior to last season) to a national ranking of 26th in the Javelin with a mark of 59.08m. The men’s throwing crew performed well as a whole under the guidance of De Jesus. After a four year hiatus from throwing, SR Ed Logan threw a personal best mark in the Shot Put of 13.13m, which was also a runner-up finish in the Landmark Conference Championships.
De Jesus is the 2007 Puerto Rican National Athlete of the Year. He is also Puerto Rico's record holder in the Under-23 hammer throw at 64.39 meters and brings a wealth of experience in the throwing events.
De Jesus has represented Puerto Rico at several international competitions including the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 2009 (Havana, Cuba) and in 2010 (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) finishing as high as seventh place in the hammer. He was a bronze medalist at the 2007 Junior Pan American Games in the same event.
He also has been involved in competitive weightlifting since high school, where he twice finished as national runner-up for Puerto Rico in the Super-Heavyweight class. He currently competes for USA Weightlifting during his "off-season" in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk.
His collegiate honors included the IC4A indoor champion in the weight throw (2011), IC4A outdoor champion in the hammer throw (2011), America East indoor champion in the weight throw (2009, 2010 and 2011), America East outdoor champion in the hammer throw (2009, 2011), America East Conference indoor performer of the year (2011) and SUNY-Albany indoor MVP (2011).
