BAYSIDE, N.Y. (April 14, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's track & field team competed in the Queensborough Relays on Saturday at Queensborough Community College. The Mariners had two ECAC Qualifying Marks hit at the event and one Academy record fell as well.
Senior Austin MacElrevey (Lewes, Del.), a couple of days after being named the ECAC DIII Metro Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 8, earned his second ECAC Qualifying Mark of the year on Saturday – this time in the 1500m run, where he came in first place with a time of 4:05.09. The Mariners also had one other first-place finish, as senior Ian Stoner (Glen Allen, Va.) came in first in the shot put with a toss of 13.85m.
Classmate Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.) also hit an ECAC Qualifying Mark, his coming in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.24, which was good for third place in the event.
The 4x200m relay team of Rob Beardsley (Bettendorf, Iowa), Christian Acevedo-Perez (Fort Knox, Ky.), Dakota Briceno (Manassas, Va.) and Christian Hammer (Simi Valley, Calif.) set a new Academy record in the event with a time of 1:40.59, which placed the team third in the event.
The Mariners are back in action next Sunday, April 22, when they host the Coach Omeltchenko Invitational at Brooks Stadium. More information on the home meet will be available on the USMMA Men's Track & Field Schedule Page closer to the event.
