SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's track & field team competed in the St. Joseph's Invitational on Sunday at St. Anthony's High School. The Mariners had a total of seven top-10 individual finishes at the event, including wins by freshman Ivan Goretoy (West Warwick, R.I.) in the weight throw and senior Austin MacElrevey (Lewes, Del.) in the 3000 meter run.
Goretoy won the weight throw with an ECAC Qualifying Mark of 15.98m (52' 5.25"). The rookie also had one other top-10 finish on the day, as he placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 12.95m (42' 6").
MacElrevey outran all his competitors in the 3000 meter race, as broke the tape in 9:09.90.
Like Goretoy, senior Ian Stoner (Glen Allen, Va.) also had an ECAC Qualifying Mark, as his toss of 14.50m (47' 7") in the shot put was good for third place. One other Mariner thrower finished in the top-10 – junior David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.) in the weight throw with a third-place finish after a 14.95m (49' 0.75") toss.
Freshman Dakota Briceno (Manassas, Va.) reached the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after running a 10.01 in the preliminaries and came in sixth place overall in the finals when he improved his time to 9.60. Just missing out on the finals in the same event was classmate Michael Hercules (Akron, Ohio), who ran a 10.10 in the preliminaries, which was good for seventh place.
Lastly, freshman Patrick Porch (Halstead, Kan.) rounded out USMMA's top-10 finishers with an eighth-place showing in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:06.06.
Up next, the Mariners that qualified for the ECAC Championships will take part in that meet the weekend of March 2-3 at the Armory in Manhattan. More information on the ECAC Championship Meet will be available closer to the event.
