Seniors Shine For Men’s Track & Field At Coach O Invite On Senior Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 17, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's track & field team hosted the Coach Omelchenko Invitational on Sunday at Brooks Stadium. Before the event started, the Mariners paid tribute to their four graduating seniors with a special Senior Day Ceremony - Michael Dittmer (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Kenneth Pressey (Yorktown, Va.), Nathan Robbins (Los Alamos, N.M.) and Tomas Sanchez (Manati, P.R.).

All four seniors recorded top 10 finishes on the day led by Dittmer, who started off the track events with a first-place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:04.97. Pressey came in fifth place in the high jump event when he leaped 1.85 meters (6ft 0.75in). In the discus, Robbins placed eighth after his throw reached 35.66 meters (117ft), and Sanchez came in 10th place in the 800 meter run when he crossed the finish line in 2:03.00.

There were four other top-10 finishes for the Mariners in other events. Freshman Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) earned a second-place finish in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:06.47. Classmate David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.) placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.53 meters (146ft 1in). Freshman Luke Theriault (Southbury, Conn.) came in eighth place in the 110 meter hurdles in 16.45 and classmate John Piper (Southampton, N.J.) finished 10th in the shot put after his toss of 10.83 meters (35ft 6.5in).

The Mariners are back in action next Saturday, April 23, when they travel to East Stroudsburg, Pa., to compete in the ESU All-American Invite.
