NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 2, 2016) – The USMMA men's track & field team came in 10th place at the CGA Spring Invite on Saturday, hosted by arch-rival Coast Guard. The Mariners, who racked up 24 points on the day, had six top-10 finishes at the event, including a second-place showing by senior Tomas Sanchez (Manati, P.R.) in the 400 meter run.
Sanchez crossed the finish line in 50.74, less than three-tenths of a second behind the winner from Coast Guard, Raeford Penny. Sanchez earned a team-best eight points from the event.
Senior Kenneth Pressey (Yorktown, Va.) earned six points with a third-place finish in the high jump. He cleared 1.83 meters with his jump (six-feet even). Classmate Michael Dittmer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) came in fourth place in the 3000 meter steeplechase race a time of 10:07.43 to earn five points for Merchant Marine. In the same race, freshman Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) placed ninth in 10:45.71.
Freshman Luke Theriault (Southbury, Conn.) came in sixth place in the 110 meter hurdles when he crossed in 17.26. Classmate David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.) led the Mariner throwers, as he finished seventh in the hammer throw with a distance of 41.20 meters (135' 2"). He earned two points for the squad.
Up next, the Mariners will host the Coach Omeltchenko Invitational at Brooks Stadium on Sunday, April 17. Prior to the meet, the program will celebrate Senior Day.
