Mariner Men Earn Two Silvers, One Bronze In Fifth-Place Showing At Landmark Championships

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's track & field team competed in the 2016 Landmark Conference Championship Meet on Saturday, hosted by Susquehanna University. The Mariner men had two silver medalists and one bronze medalist, while picking up 36 points to finish in fifth place overall at the event.

Senior Tomas Sanchez (Manati, P.R.) placed second in the 400 meter run with a time of 50.89 and sophomore Blase Neumann (Spokane, Wash.) finished tied for second in the pole vault event, clearing 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5.25 inches).

Sophomore Seung Hwang (Wayne, N.J.) came in third place in the 60 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.92 in the finals after qualifying with a 9.07 in the preliminaries earlier in the meet.

Other top-five finishes at the event came from freshmen Luke Theriault (Southbury, Conn.) and David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.), as well as the Mariners' 4x200 meter, 4x400 meter and distance medley relay teams. Theriault came in fifth place in the 60 meter hurdles with a finals time of 9.19 after the 9.16 he ran in the prelims qualified him for the finals, Collins' toss of 13.82 meters (45 feet, 4.25 inches) in the weight throw was also good for fifth.

The 4x200 meter relay squad of senior Daniel Kennedy (Youngstown, Ohio), Sanchez, sophomore Matthew Pari (Marlboro, N.J.) and senior Alex Waterbury (Dallas, Texas) came in fourth place with a time of 1:35.75, while the 4x800 relay team of freshman Severin Blenkush (O'Fallon, Ill.), Sanchez, Kennedy and senior Michael Dittmer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also finished in fourth place in 3:35.19.

The distance medley relay team of Dittmer and freshmen Joseph Williams (San Diego, Calif.), John Robertson (Pfafftown, N.C.) and Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) placed fifth in 11:24.48.

Moravian won the 2016 Landmark Championship for the seventh-straight season and eighth of the past nine years. Hosts Susquehanna came in second place and Elizabethtown placed third.

Up next for the Mariners, senior Kenneth Pressey (Yorktown, Va.) will compete in the high jump event at next weekend's ECAC Championship Meet. The event is scheduled for Friday-Saturday March 4-5 hosted by the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, N.Y.
