The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's track and field team was selected third by Landmark Conference coaches heading into the 2012-13 indoor season.
Merchant Marine ended their 2012 outdoor season more than doubling their point total at conference championships from the previous year; improving from 55 to 103.5.
This year, the Mariners bring in a fresh crop of strong freshmen including Tradd Stephens, a 400m All-State standout from Georgia, Chase Dwyer, a state qualifier from Pennsylvania and 45' triple jumper, and Andrew Walsh who was a standout for the Mariners during the cross country season.
A few of USMMA's top performers from last year will be out at sea during the winter, but will return for the outdoor season. Sophomore Chris Cook who won conference championships last year in the Long Jump and 200m will be at sea, as will sophomore Tomas Sanchez who won a conference championship in the 400m.
Returning to the squad and looking to make an impact will be junior Tyler McDaniel and sophomore Mikel McGann who were both conference scorers in the 200m and 600m. Sophomores Ryan Faber, and Luke Kolbeck, scorers in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump will also be returning to the mix along with standout sophomore pole vaulters Bryan Tischler and Trevor Brandt.
Moravian College, who has won four out of five Landmark Indoor Championships since the conference's inception was picked number one, receiving four first place votes.
Merchant Marine opens their track and field season Saturday Jan. 5, at the Crowell Invitational in West Point, NY.
