KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 10, 2019) – The USMMA tennis team lost its Skyline match to visiting Farmingdale State, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Brooks Stadium Courts. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-3 (2-2 Skyline), while the Rams improve to 5-2 (2-1 Skyline).
Merchant Marine was leading 2-1 after doubles action as the #2 pairing of senior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and freshman Connor Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won their match, 8-4, and the #3 team of senior Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) and freshman John Guettlein (Arvada, Colo.) was victorious, 8-6.
The Rams took five of the six singles flights, however, as the only decision to go the Mariners' way was at #2, where junior Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) came out on top in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-1).
Up next, the Mariners will look to end their three-match losing skid when they play host to Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence College this Saturday, April 13, at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
