KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 2, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team welcomed in St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn for its Skyline Conference home-opener on Tuesday at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The Mariners took all nine points from the Bears to remain undefeated at 4-0 (2-0 Skyline) on the season, while SJC falls to 1-3 (0-1 Skyline).
In doubles action, the #3 flight of senior Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) and freshman John Guettlein (Arvada, Colo.) were the first to finish, taking their match 8-1. At #2, seniors Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and Matt Hazelwood (Altavista, Va.) won 8-0 and the top flight of juniors Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) and Blaine Mueller (Meridian, Miss.) closed out the action with an 8-1 triumph.
The Mariners had a total of four 6-0, 6-0 straight-set wins in singles. Senior William Peterson (Midlothian, Va.) was the first to take care of business at #6. Guettlein's win at #4 clinched USMMA's victory and then Deeter at #2 and McGaffigan at #1 finished their doughnuts, both coming after Mueller's 6-1, 6-0 victory at #5.
In a very closely-contested #3 singles matchup, Smith battled Bears' senior Denise Trerotola to an 8-6 pro-set victory, the shortened match was agreed upon by the coaches due to darkness after the victory was already clinched for the Mariners.

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Purchase College this Saturday, April 6, for a road Skyline match against the Panthers that is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
