PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (March 27, 2019) – On Wednesday, the USMMA tennis team opened up Skyline Conference action with a 7-1 road victory at St. Joseph's-Long Island. In victory, the Mariners improve to 3-0 (1-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-1 (0-1 Skyline) with the loss.
The Mariners swept all three doubles flights with the top pairing of senior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and junior Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) winning 8-2, followed by the #2 flight of seniors Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and Matt Hazelwood (Altavista, Va.) claiming an 8-6 triumph and the final team of senior Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) and freshman John Guettlein (Arvada, Colo.) grabbing an 8-4 win at #3.
In singles action, the Mariners took #1 and #2 quickly to clinch the victory, as Zakrevski won at the top-flight, 6-1, 6-2, followed by McGaffigan at #2 winning 6-1, 6-0. They also picked up wins at #3 by Deeter, 6-2, 6-0, and at #6 by junior Blaine Mueller (Meridian, Miss.), 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6 in the tiebreaker).
The #5 flight featuring Smith did not finish.

Up next for the Mariner tennis team will be a home match next Tuesday, April 2, against Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
