KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 16, 2019) – The USMMA tennis team was victorious in its home-opener over non-conference opponent Hunter College, 6-3, at the Brooks Stadium Courts on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Mariners' record to 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks drop to 0-2.
Merchant Marine swept the double action all with identical 8-5 scores across the three flights – senior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and junior Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) at #1, senior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and freshman Connor Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at #2 and freshman John Guettlein (Arvada, Colo.) and senior Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) at #3.
In singles action, two of the first three flights to go final went in favor of Hunter, as McGaffigan won at #2, 6-3, 6-2. Clinching the victory for USMMA was Campbell at #4, who rallied from dropping his first set to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Guettlein closed out the match with a similar win for the Mariners, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Up next, the Mariners will travel out to Patchogue, N.Y., on Wednesday, March 27, for their Skyline-opener against St. Joseph's-L.I. Opening serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Golden Eagles' Outdoor Complex Tennis Courts.
