Mariners Open Skyline Action With 8-1 Home Win Over St. Joseph’s-L.I.

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 24, 2018) – The USMMA tennis team hosted St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday at the Spring home-opener and Skyline Conference-opener at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The Mariners defeated the Golden Eagles, 8-1, to improve to 2-4 (1-0 Skyline) on the season, while SJC opens the year 0-1 (0-1 Skyline). 

Merchant Marine swept the doubles action to open up a 3-0 lead to start the match. Junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and senior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) finished first at #3 with a 8-0 decision followed by another doughnut win by freshmen Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) and Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) at #1. The #2 duo of senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) finished doubles action with an 8-3 triumph. 

The Mariners clinched the match with back-to-back victories at #6 and #4 singles, with freshman Beau Llewellyn (Frederick, Md.) at the sixth flight and Schwartz at #4 both earning 6-0, 6-0 victories. Booth (6-1, 6-0) and Carey (6-0, 6-0) at #2 and #1, respectively, followed with two more wins for USMMA, while Deeter earned the Mariners' final point with a 7-5, 6-2 "W" at #3. 

The Golden Eagles' lone point came on a 6-3, 6-3 victory by sophomore Damian Duda at #5. 

Up next, the Mariners travel to arch-rival Coast Guard this Tuesday, March 27, for an important match with a point in the overall standings of the 2017-18 Superintendents' Trophy on the line. First serve of doubles action is scheduled for 4 p.m. up in New London, Conn.
