ORLANDO, Fla. (March 9, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team lost its final match down in Florida, 8-1, on Friday to Saint John's (Minn.). The defeat drops the Mariners to 1-4 on the season, while the Johnnies improve to 8-1.
USMMA's lone win in the match came at #2 singles, where freshman Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) defeated his opponent, SJU junior Ryan Meger, in three sets – 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (12-10). All of the Johnnies' singles wins were in straight sets.
The Mariners put up a fight in doubles, as the top flight of Carey and classmate Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) lost by just three games, 8-5, and the #3 flight of junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and sophomore Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) was defeated by four just games, 8-4.

The Mariners will now return to New York and will open up Skyline Conference action later this month on Thursday, March 22, on the road against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. That match will take place at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
