Hicks Garners First Team All-Skyline Recognition; McDonough And McGaffigan Nab Second Team Honors

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 9, 2017) – Three members of the USMMA men's tennis team were selected to the 2017 All-Skyline Conference Teams, the league announced on Tuesday. Senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) was chosen by the conference's head coaches to the First Team, while junior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) earned Second Team accolades.

This is the third year of Hicks' career in which he received an All-Conference recognition – he was named to the All-Landmark First Team for singles in 2014 and 2015 and also the All-Landmark Second Team for doubles in 2015. This season, he competed at #1 the entire year for the Mariners, compiling a 10-5 record in singles action and a 12-4 record in doubles play. His 12 doubles wins were best on the team, while his 10 singles victories ranked second. He landed on the Skyline weekly honor roll three straight weeks (March 27, April 3 and April 10).

McDonough completed in seven matches towards the end of the Mariners' campaign, as he was out on his Sea Term during the early part of the season. He compiled a 5-1 record in singles action, primarily out of #2, while also boasting a 6-1 mark in doubles, all at #1. This is also the third season that McDonough has received All-Conference accolades – he was on the All-Landmark First Team singles and Second Team doubles in 2015, while also being named the Landmark Rookie of the Year that season, and repeated on the All-Landmark First Team in 2016.

McGaffigan led the Mariners with 12 singles wins, as he compiled a 12-3 record split between #2, #3, #4 and #5. He went 10-1 at the second and third flights combined, and he was also undefeated in Skyline Conference singles action with an 8-0 record. In doubles play, the rookie was tied for second on the team with 11 victories, primarily out of #2, where he went 9-2. McGaffigan was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on April 24.

Hicks, McDonough and McGaffigan helped guide Merchant Marine to a 10-5 season in 2016-17, just the second year that the program has reached double-digit wins. The Mariners were 6-2 in Skyline Conference action, which was good for the #3 seed in the postseason tournament. They ended the season in the Skyline Semifinals last week.
