PURCHASE, N.Y. (May 4, 2017) – The third-seeded USMMA men's tennis team ended the 2016-17 season on Thursday night with a 5-2 road loss at second-seeded Purchase College in the semifinals of the Skyline Conference Tournament. In defeat, the Mariners finish the year with a 10-5 record while the Panthers improve to 11-1 and will move on to face the winner of #4 Mount St. Mary at #1 Yeshiva in the Skyline Finals this weekend.
The Mariners led 2-1 after doubles action, as the #1 flight of senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and junior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) won their match 8-4 and the #2 duo of senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) defeated their counterparts, 8-1.
Purchase took #3 doubles by an 8-5 decision and then won the first four singles matchups that finished (#1, #3, #5 and #6) to clinch the victory on the night.
For Merchant Marine, the 10-5 record marked just the second time in program history that the Mariners registered double-digit wins, as they first did so back in 2015 when they went 13-6.
